I've been friends with Kenneth Herring of River & Rail, a gem of a community theatre here in Knoxville. I had to share about River & Rail, and Kenneth graciously agreed to an interview,

I love catching up with people, especially longtime friends. Thanks for taking the time to talk about River & Rail today. When we first met we were competitors. Across a couple of companies, actually.

But today you're at River and Rail, why the change?

Kenneth

I joined River & Rail in 2021, it was an amazing opportunity to work in professional theatre. At River & Rail there's a great mix of creativity and production that makes every day challenging but fun. And there is so much we bring to the community.

Jonathan

There is a lot to unpack there. You've cared about the local community in so many ways for as long as we've known each other. How do your community values play out at River & Rail?

Kenneth

We establish community partnerships that allow us to introduce them to acting, technical design and verbal communication. One of the most important aspects of our organization is to provide educational, learning and growth opportunities.

Our most recent is with students at L&N Stem Academy, Pellissippi, and UT, that provides their students an opportunity to work alongside theatre professionals from R&R.

If you ever dreamed of acting, we’d love to help you and get to auditions. It’s never too late to chase your dreams!

Jonathan

That's right, you found your dream job after being in IT for years. We obviously stayed friends, why do you think that is?

Kenneth

Yes, I did professionally compete against you -- JM Addington Technology Solutions -- for several years. It was always a joy. You built a team rooted in trustworthiness, hard work and a commitment to the customer and community.

And those are values we share no matter what.

Jonathan

Absolutely. On that note, do you have any last things you want to bring up?

Kenneth

Just this: At River & Rail we seek to unite people from all backgrounds through theatre to experience stories that embody our shared humanity. We want to create a space for people to feel valued, accepted, and safe. Let you really feel the power and beauty of theater.

Jonathan

Thanks Kenneth. You’re doing amazing work at River & Rail.
