Following "isolated" reports of users' files being completely erased during upgrades Microsoft announced a "pause" of the Windows 2018 Fall Update. Microsoft has gone so far as saying that if you have a copy of the upgrade already, you should delete it instead of installing it.

Microsoft also faced issues with drive incompatibility with an Intel sound driver, notable mostly because Intel and Microsoft are fairly close partners; it's surprising to see them whiff this one together. It's also clear that while Microsoft has just about become a new company in the last several years, major updates are still a process that they need to improve upon.

For JM Addington managed services customers we manage the rollout of major Windows releases and typically don't allow the major upgrades to be installed until they've been out in the wild for everyone else for at least 30 days. So far, we haven't encountered this issue.

Finally, just a reminder that the feature updates are major upgrades, even if they are free. Businesses should already be keeping centrally managed backups in place.  For home users, Backblaze is a fantastic option for backup.
